Building Cross-Sector Alignment on AI, Climate Philanthropy, and Environmental Justice

From the steam engine to the printing press, history shows that major technological innovations often benefit those in power while disproportionately harming marginalized communities. AI is no different. Already, BIPOC and frontline communities are experiencing impacts, from resource extraction for data centers to job displacement and increased surveillance.

AI is the most significant technological shift of our generation. It is already shaping philanthropy, strategy, and decision-making in ways that will affect the environmental movement. That’s why Building Equity and Alignment for Environmental Justice (BEA) is leading cross-sector conversations to ask: What does this mean for frontline communities? How will AI change who is resourced, who is recognized, and whose voices carry weight in climate work?

Over the next year, BEA’s working groups will bring together frontline EJ groups, national greens, philanthropy, and tech justice advocates to democratize the conversation, build shared understanding, and uncover opportunities for common cause. We are examining how AI is used, evaluated, and governed- and the risks of it becoming the next gatekeeper of funding and legitimacy. At the same time, we are exploring AI’s potential alongside principles of accountability, consent, and equity.

This is an invitation to join us as we move from debating a “just AI” toward building just and thriving futures.
